Dagh Dehlvi's famous ghazal: Ghazab kiya tere wade par etbar kiya...

Dagh Dehlvi, one of the master poets of Urdu ghazal, was born in 1831.

He had his upbringing in the Qila-e-Mualla in the company of royal princes during the reign of last Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. Read his ghazal:

ग़ज़ब किया, तेरे वादे पे ऐतबार किया
तमाम रात क़यामत का इन्तज़ार किया

तुझे* तो वादा-ए-दीदार हम से करना था
ये क्या किया कि जहाँ को उम्मीदवार किया

हम ऐसे महवे-नज़ारा न थे जो होश आता
मगर तुम्हारे तग़ाफ़ुल** ने होशियार किया

तेरी निगह के तसव्वुर में हमने ए क़ातिल
लगा लगा के गले से छुरी को प्यार किया

कुछ आगे दावर-ए-महशर* से है उम्मीद मुझे
कुछ आप ने मेरे कहने का ऐतबार किया

tujhe* to waada-e-deedaar ham se karna tha
ye kya kiya ki jahaa.n ko ummiidwaar kiya

ham aise mahv-e-nazaara na the jo hosh aata
magar tumhaare taGhaaful ne hoshyaar kiya

teri nigaah ke tasavvur mei.n hamne aye qaatil
laga laga ke gale se chhuri ko pyaar kiya

kuch aage daawar-e-mahshar se hai ummeed mujhe
kuchh tumne mere kahne ka aitbaar kiya
