Poetry on Politics: Irtiza Nishat's ghazal on politicians, communalism and society

Critics often complain that ghazal doesn't deal with contemporary issues though it's incorrect.

This ghazal has seven couplets, which deal with falling standards of politicians in the country, tackles issues like civic rights, communalism and injustice.

इन्हीं के हाथों सड़क पे हम तुम पड़े हुए हैं
इन्हें बदल दो, ये रहनुमा सब सड़े हुए हैं

हम और दुश्मन वतन के? फिरकापरस्त गुंडो!
ये सारे क़िस्से तुम्हारे अपने गढ़े हुए हैं

हमें भगाने की कोशिशों को तलाक़ दे दो
यहां से जाएँ! यहीं तो पल के बड़े हुए हैं

वतन पे क़ुर्बानियों में हम कब किसी से कम हैं
क़दम क़दम पर हमारे झंडे गड़े हुए हैं

शहीद टीपू, हमीद, उस्मान, हनीफ, अशफ़ाक़
इसी ज़मीं पर ये हीरे मोती जड़े हुए हैं

अब हिन्दू मुस्लिम हैं भाई भाई मिटाओ इनको!
चलाओ गोली, तुम्हारे आगे खड़े हुए हैं

हम इर्तिज़ा उस दरख़्त जैसे वतन में अपने
कि जिसके पत्ते बहार में भी झड़े हुए हैं

inheN badal do, ye rahnuma sab saRe hue haiN

ham aur dushman watan ke! firqaparast Gundo!
ye saare qisse tumhaare apne gaRhe hue haiN

hameN bhagaane kii koshishoN ko talaaq de do
yahaaN se jaayeN! yahiiN to pal ke baRe hue haiN

watan pe qurbaniyoN meN ham kab kisi se kam haiN
qadam qadam par hamaare jhanDe gaRe hue haiN

Shaheed Tipu, Hameed, UsmaaN, Hanif, Ashfaq
isii zamiiN par ye heere moti jaRe hue haiN

ab Hindu, Muslim haiN bhai-bhai, mitaao inko
chalaao goli, tumhaare aage khaRe hue haiN

ham Irtiza us darakht jaise watan meN apne
ki jiske patte bahaar meN bhi jhaRe hue haiN
